Measurement!

On Thursday we had lots of fun with Measurement!  We were in groups of 3 or 4 and we had to draw around one group member.  Our next job was to estimate the length of certain body parts such as wrist, ankle, foot, height.  Some of our estimates were way off and some were pretty spot on when we went to measure with the measuring tapes.

Newspaper Star

Yesterday Harper was most excited to find out she was a star in the newspaper.  Harper was one of only 3 people who dressed in Captain Underpants costume at the Dav Pilkey session last Friday.  Go Harper!

Dav Pilkey !

Last Friday Tiaan, Hayden and Harper were very lucky to go to Shirley boys and meet Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey.  They really enjoyed listening to him and the exciting part was getting there books signed by the author himself.  Harper even dressed up as Captain Underpants.

Huhu Grubs!

This afternoon Keaira's Mum brought in some Huhu grubs.  Keaira talked about the Huhu grubs and explained that they had burried their home in the piece of wood where they were found and that their poo was even orangey in colour.  She told us that that turn into huhu beetles.  Some children in our class even know some people who have eaten a huhu grub!  We have the challenge of finding out any extra facts about the bugs and we will share these tomorrow morning with the class.

Measurement

Today we were estimating and measuring.  We are exploring length, weight and capacity during our maths sessions for two weeks.  We enjoyed estimating the length of objects that might be measured using mm, cm and m.  We found out that we were reasonably close to the actual measurement of some objects.

Tapa Cloth Pacific Island Printmaking

Today Bianca from the Art Gallery visited Room 20 for a lesson about printmaking.  We really enjoyed ourselves and we all printed our own unique designs.  We made a special class tapa cloth also.
We used a planning sheet to practise a design that was special to us.  Then we used a square piece from a meat tray and with a pencil scratched/drew our design on it.  We were ready to use the special ink and rollers to begin our print making.  We were all pleased with our efforts today!

David Walliams

Last week Charlotte, Sammie and Emma went to listen to David Walliams speak about being an author,  They waited patiently for an hour and a half to get their books signed - Definitely worth the wait!

Autumn Leaves

Autumn has arrived in Room 20.  Come in and read our fabulous Autumn poems we have falling from our classroom door.

David Walliams

Tonight I took my children along to St Margaret's College and listened to David Walliams talk about himself as a chidlren's author.  My children now have a large collection of his books - they thoroughly enjoy reading them.  He wrote his first book seven years ago and has written seven chapter books so far.  The first book he wrote is called "The boy in a dress."  His last book published is "Awful Aunty."  We waited patiently with a number of other St Alban's children to get a photo taken with him and have him sign some of our books - it was certainly worth the hour and a half wait we thought!  We saw Charlotte Todd and Harper and some other St Alban's teachers were spotted in the crowd too!!
You might like to search for some of his books at library time on Friday!!!

Library Time!

We are enjoying having our library spot on a Friday before lunch.  I am so pleased to see the children enjoying the large variety of books and making sensible choices to ensure they are reading their two books over the week.  We had our first two librarians taking care of the returns and issuing of the books.  Tanner and Eden did a fantastic job - Thank you.

Choir time!

Today we headed off to Choir with Mrs Emeleus.  We are learning three songs: Snow gum, Our dustpan and the Red, Red Robin.  I am most impressed with the behaviour of all the children and their ability to follow Mrs Emeleus and sing their hearts out.  Well done Room's 16, 17 and 20!

Morse Code

Today Finnely shared her Great Grandad's Morse Code machine.  She explained how it was used and how it was hooked up to wires to connect with others.  She was able to tap out a message to us using the machine.  How cool is it to tap away in morse code and write secret messages to others in code.  Have you written to me in code yet?

Autumn Leaves!

Today we started writing a poem about Autumn.  After fitness time we headed over to the far side of the field to gather some inspiration.  We were little beavers scurrying around gathering up as many leaves as we could to make two big piles.  We split into two teams and then on the count of three threw the leaves in the air - we then regrouped as a class and did it one last time.  Many children took some interesting leaves back to class to inspect the colours, shapes, crispness, lines and markings on them.  We said some even felt like a cats tongue licking your hand.  Hopefully we will be inspired to write descriptive, creative poems that really capture Autumn.  We will publish these later in the week.
