The big Cross-Country Day!

Today we all ran our very best and participated in the Year 4 Cross-Country.  We cheered on the junior and senior children before we headed over to English Park for our turn to race.  Mr Williams was in charge of the warm up and setting us off on our run.  There were so many people cheering us on.  A big thank you to all the parents and supporters that came to see us run.
The goals we had set were to run the whole way, to do our very best and to enjoy the race.  We all achieved these and Mrs Allen felt very proud of us all.  We were particularly proud of Eden, who won the Year 4 girl's race and Riley and Makenzie for getting 2nd and 3rd in the Year 4 boy's race.  Well done!  I apologise if there is not a photo of your child at the finish line - it was rather busy snapping them all as they came in.  Enjoy the movie.

Wow - Anzac Biscuit Bake Off!

Wow! I am so super impressed by your amazing baking skills and imaginations for the Anzac Biscuit Baking Challenge.  You should all be so proud of your efforts - I think you are amazing! Some children added a secret ingredient to their recipe.  We were lucky to have some senior chidlren (who had baked some Anzac biscuits last week) judge our competition.  They looked at packaging style, uniqueness,  biscuit style, crunchiness and flavour.  We are all looking forward to trying a piece at school tomorrow.

Happy Birthday to Tanner.

Tanner had a fantastic time celebrating her birthday on Anzac Day.  She was busy building all the new lego projects she received as gifts.  We were also very spoilt as Tanner's Mum and sister Piper bought in Ice Blocks for us to have on Friday afternoon to celebrate with Tanner.  A big Happy 9th Birthday to Tanner.

A catch up on holiday birthdays!

We have had a number of children celebrating their special day.  Three children turned 8 in the holidays and all enjoyed celebrating with their friends and family.
Happy Birthday Keaira, Makenzie and Benny!

Anzac Service

On Friday we had a very special Anzac Day Service.  We sung the National Anthem with pride and listened to Chris Wallace tell us a story about the battles at Gallipoli.  Mr Williams told us an amazing story about a family fleeing war times and coming to live in NZ and bringing their prized possession - a spoon, with them.  We listened to The Last Post - played by a trumpeter called Angus from St Andrews and each class had a representative to lay their white cross with the name of a soldier on it. Our class soldier was called Lieut Cyril Hayter.  We found out he came from Burkes Pass and went to high school in Christchurch.  Sadly he did not return from war.

Steven's War Medals and war stories!

Last Thursday Steven (Makenzie's Dad) came to school and talked to all the Year 4 chidlren about the time he spent in the Army and he showed off some very special medals of his own and also some of his grandfather's (Makenzie's great grandfather).
Steven spoke to us about what life was like in wartimes - back in the world wars and also in more recent times when he served for the Army.Steven also brought along a statue of a soldier that looks a bit like he did when he was in Bosnia. He even brought along his army hat.  We learned that a soldier wears their own medals on the left hand side and if you are wearing someone else's medals you wear them on the right. Thanks so much for coming in and sharing your special medals and knowledge with us.

What was I thinking???

Arghhh I do wonder if the Anzac Biscuits could last until the 28th June?? I very much doubt they will still be crunchy by then!!!

I have made a mistake and wrote 28th June - the note on the Anzac Biscuits sheet should read Tuesday 28th April!!!!

Happy baking :)

Baking Day.

Today Room 20 and Room 19 headed over to Room 3 to bake some Anzac Biscuits.  We all helped out in some way to make the biscuits and certainly enjoyed the finished product - delicious!!!!

Inquiry Time in Term 2

For the first half of this term we will be learning about Anzac Day and WW1.  You could start thinking about Anzac Day and what it means to you.  If anyone has anything related to Anzac Day or WW1 and would like to share it with our class, please bring it in.  We would love to share anything.  Some children may even have relatives such as a great grand-dad or great-great uncle who may have served in the war.  We would love to share any family stories.  Our reading programme will be based around WW1 readings and a large part of our writing will be the same focus.
There are some amazing youtube clips and websites we will be looking at in the coming weeks.
You can read some letters from soldiers here and have a listen to The Last Post here.

Looking Forward to Monday...

I hope you have all had an amazing holiday and are super excited about coming back on Monday.  I can't wait to see you all and hear about your holiday and see you all together again.
Remember to wear the winter uniform - Girls are the ones who need to have the change.  You don't need to have your hats at school this term, although i would still encourage you to bring it along as we are still getting some lovely sunny days.  See you all on Monday morning.
